Digital Media in the Field of Preservation

Within the last ten years, the advances in technology have begun to assert themselves in all fields of study.  Preservation has not fallen short in the use of such advancements. Although it has taken Historic Preservation a bit longer to catch on to the changes, currently more technology is being used in the preservation of our cultural heritage. Recently, I was lucky enough to come across the National Park Service's new virtual tour of the Ellis Island Hospital Complex. It was completed by Heritage Documentation Programs. Having gone on the actual Hard Hat Tour myself, I felt this was an extremely accurate portrayal of the experience. Considering the real Hard Hat Tour is $50.00 per ticket, it can be a bit pricey for some Ellis Island visitors. This virtual tour provides everyone with an opportunity to experience the rarely seen Hospital Complex in its current state. This documentation will provide an amazing record to look back upon once the restoration and stabilization of the complex is complete.
